Description Doulton Burslem lamp base decorated by George Fernyhough. Item 4534.This small Doulton Burslem lamp base was decorated by George Fernyhough, who was at Doulton Burslem from around 1887 until 1905. The decoration consists of hand painted flowers and foliage outlined with raised gilding on a buff coloured ground, in the manner of Doulton’s “Spanish Ware”. “Spanish Ware” has been described by Desmond Eyles in his book “The Doulton Burslem Wares”as “featuring exceedingly fine raised gold outline traceries of flowers, leaves, arabesques and other motifs, combined with on-glaze enamel painting and raised paste, often on a vellum or ivory ground”. This pattern (A4996) was first issued in the late 1880’s and the shape, L244, was registered in 1890 (Rd. 153609). In the latter part of the 19th century, Doulton was one of the largest suppliers of ceramic lamp bases. This base stands 160 mm (6.25 inches) from the silver plated mount at the base to the top of the brass lamp fitting, and has a diameter at the base of 65 mm (2.5 inches). When you add the glass chimney the height is 327 mm (12.75 inches). There is some crazing to the body, and some slight damage to the brass fitting and the chimney. As the Doulton Burslem mark on this piece was altered in 1891, this piece can be dated to 1890.
