Description Royal Doulton Chine Ware vase. Item 4831.This baluster shaped Royal Doulton vase is decorated in the Chine Ware manner patented by Doulton. Doulton and Slaters patent, also known as Chine Ware was a decoration process that involved pressing pieces of linen, lace, net or other fabrics onto the soft clay shortly after it had come off the potter’s wheel, leaving the corresponding impressed pattern behind. In the case of this vase, a very fine net fabric was used. Moulded pieces of clay (also known as sprigs) were then applied over the fabric pattern to be fired and later finished in the required colours. All the raised dots on the vases, (known as jewels) were applied by hand. It stands 262 mm (10.25 inches) high, has a diameter of 105 mm (4 1/8th inches) and is in very good condition, The incised initials EP on the base were the mark of Emily Partington who worked at the factory in Lambeth from 1876 until 1912, whilst the impressed SOO was the mark of Fanny Sayers who was at the Lambeth factory from 1882 -c 1903. As the Royal Doulton mark was first used in 1902 and Sayers left in around 1903, this vase must date from that narrow time frame.
